Parish Ministry

Parish ministry can be defined as "the empowerment of the parish as the people of God to fulfill the Church's mission of love, justice, freedom and peace by communally responding in an organized way to societal and individual human needs." (Peeler, 1985). Parish Ministry encompasses everything that the parish does to care for each other and our neighbors, from housekeeping to outreach. It is the life of the church lived out throughout the week.

Sunday Morning Ministries

Our church members care for each other by serving on our Sunday morning team of acolytes, altar servers, lay readers, chalice bearers, lectors, altar guild members, coffee servers, ushers, choristers, and Sunday school teachers and helpers. It takes a lot of people just to have church service on a typical Sunday morning, and their participation makes our community stronger.

 Fellowship Ministries

Our care of our church extends to taking care of our building and people on an ongoing basis. These are ministries that are vital to the health of our church. The parishioners who clean up and organize storage areas, keep inventory so we use our resources wisely, and pick up bulletins left over after Sunday services enable other ministries to run smoothly.

The men of Good Shepherd meet together for jovial conversation and dinner at 6:00 every third Thursday of the month. They discuss various needs the church has and schedule work days for specific projects that are needed to care for our building and grounds.

The women of Good Shepherd are involved in caring for our parish in many ways, from taking inventory to teaching, and much more. Some women in the church are also part of Diocesan Prayer Orders. More information about the Orders can be found here.

On-going Community Outreach

The people of Good Shepherd are faithful to care on a regular basis for our community in many ways. We regularly bake cakes for the State Hospital, provide a home for a local boy scout troop, and assemble goody bags for Midwestern State University students during finals.

Church of the Good Shepherd has a long term commitment to Interfaith Outreach Services, our neighbor down the street, to help keep the food pantry stocked. Every month, we let the congregation know the needs of the pantry, collect the needed items in the foyer, and deliver them to the pantry. Occasionally, some parishioners will also give their time to help stocking or distributing food. We consider it an honor and joy to carry out our church's mission to care for our neighbors with the love of God through these community outreach ministries.

Special Events

All of the special events that go on in the church throughout the year are part of our parish's ministry to the community and to each other. This is how we fulfill our church's mission to share God's love to everyone we encounter. Our special events are listed on the Events page and shown in the Events Calendar below. (Recurring events that happen on a weekly or monthly basis are listed on this calendar.)
